Students will sit public examinations from Years 10-13 typically at GCSE, AS and A level and possibly others such as BTEC, Cambridge Nationals, Cambridge Technicals. Modular and terminal examinations currently take place mainly in May-June and re-sits for GCSE Maths and English in November.

In most GCSE courses students will complete controlled assessments, which are examined tasks completed during the course. These assessments are similar to coursework in many ways and give students an opportunity to show what they know about a certain topic or area of a given subject.

However, Controlled Assessment is different from coursework by having controls which determine how and where students complete their assessments and what resources they may use.

These controls mean that:

  • all students complete their assessments in the same way
  • assessments are fairer and more reliable
  • students get the marks they deserve.

Students may still complete coursework in some advanced level (post 16 courses) depending on the subject.

We believe it is important for students to experience formal exams and at the end of each year students will sit end of year summative assessments to support them in consolidating their knowledge and understanding and applying this to exam style questions.

We provide support for students in developing revision skills and study skills to enable them to be confident preparing for exams and be successful.
